In South Louisiana when the hot weather arrives, so do the thunderstorms and hurricane season. Sure, we have the some of the best food and a rich culture, but every paradise has its downsides too. The West Coast has fires and earthquakes, the Plains have tornados, the North East has blizzards, and the Gulf Coast has hurricanes.
So what do you need to do to prepare? Well that depends on your situation. FEMA offers disaster preparedness guides for individuals and for businesses.
According to FEMA basic preparedness for all disaster planning includes:
- Get informed about hazards and emergencies that may affect you and your family.
- Develop an emergency plan.
- Collect and assemble disaster supplies kit.
- Learn where to seek shelter from all types of hazards.
- Identify the community warning systems and evacuation routes.
- Include in your plan required information from community and school plans.
- Learn what to do for specific hazards. · Practice and maintain your plan.
