We highly recommend an emergency warning radio.  I personally use a clock/weather/emergency radio that I purchased from Radio Shack.  You can set the warnings you want , i.e. snow, avalanche, hurricane, ice, tornado, fire, etc. These radios are inexpensive and ensure that you get warnings, even when the TV is turned off.  Click here for a list of radios sold by Radio Shack.

We also highly recommend a free subscription to MystateUSA.com .  This website offers free text message and email alerts for weather, emergency, and other alerts, like Amber.  This service is great, as most of us have a cell phone close at all times.

Remember that on average, you have only 11 minutes of warning for a tornado.  Most tornados occur between 4PM and 9PM, however tornados can occur at any time.  The faster you get the warning, the better your chances are of protecting yourself or your family.
